It was discovered that Civil War photographer George H. Houghton, a member of Dells Freemasons Lodge (No. 124), did not have a grave marker. A marker was recently provided – thanks, in part, to the Wisconsin Freemasonry “Acts of Kindness” $500 matching grant the Dells Lodge received – and dedicated.
Brother Houghton was an uncle to famed Dells Photographer H.H. Bennett. George’s Civil War photos can be seen at the H.H. Bennett Museum in Wisconsin Dells.
Brother Dave Rambow the former director of H.H. Bennett Museum said that Houghton camped with the Army of the Potomac, a Union Army branch from from 1861 to 1863. Brother Houghton is buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.
Attending the marker dedication were, pictured above from left: Chris Holzman, Debbie Abraham, Sabella Holzman, Dave Rambow, Paul Eilbes (from Civil War Round Table) Hannah Harvey, Ezra Schladweiler, Estelle Schladweiler, Bennett family member Betsy Grant, Master of Dells Lodge James Bonine and La Crosse area Historian Robert Taunt.
