What is Freemasonry?

Masonry (also known as Freemasonry) is the world’s first and largest fraternal organization. It is a brotherhood of like-minded men who genuinely care about each other. We develop lifelong friendships with fellow Masons and their families, and are welcomed at Masonic lodges throughout the United States and the world.

Freemasonry is based on the belief that each man has a responsibility to help make the world a better place. Through our culture of philanthropy, we make a profound difference for our brothers, our families, our communities, and our future. Freemasons find satisfaction in being part of a centuries-old fraternity whose traditions and core values are relevant today, and will endure for centuries to come.

About the Fraternity

mission & Vision

Vision: “We will be the preeminent fraternity of choice for men of quality and vision who seek personal knowledge, moral growth and leadership development; ultimately improving the individual mason, his community and the world.”

Mission:To promote personal development by reinforcing moral principles, to assist those suffering unfortunate circumstances, and to foster friendship and cooperation among all people.”

Core Values

Freemasonry is a society of men bound by Brotherhood, united through the practice of sound moral and spiritual values and a love of family. Masons serve all humankind through fraternal and charitable opportunities found within the Masonic Family.

Our mission is guided by the enduring and relevant principles of our fraternity:

  • Brotherly love. We value respect, freedom, kindness, tolerance, and our differences – religious, ethnic, cultural, social, generational, and educational – and strive for harmony in our individual lives, in our lodges, and in the global community.
  • Relief. We take responsibility for the well-being of our brothers, our families, and the community as a whole. We provide relief through philanthropy, community involvement, and delivery of excellent care.
  • Truth. We stay true to our personal code of conduct and ethics – honor, integrity, personal responsibility, and the continuous pursuit of knowledge.

We refer to these as our tenets.

About Our Members

With more than 11,000 members statewide, our fraternity represents the entire spectrum of Wisconsinites. Admission to our lodges is open to men of good character and faith, regardless of their race, color, religious beliefs, political views, sexual orientation, physical ability, citizenship or national origin. Our lodges currently work in English and German.

Brotherhood

Through this universal brotherhood, Masons learn to be better husbands, better fathers, better brothers, and better citizens. By appreciating our differences, we learn to focus on what unites mankind. Thus, the discussion of religion, politics, and business is not permitted in our lodges. In this way we live up to the centuries-old aim of our fraternity – to unite men of every country, sect, and opinion and cause true friendship among those who otherwise would have remained at a distance.

Purpose

What is the purpose of Freemasonry? One of its most basic purposes is to make good men even better. We place an emphasis on the individual man by helping him strengthen his character, improving his moral and spiritual outlook, and broadening his mental horizons.

We believe in the principles of personal responsibility and morality, encouraging each member to practice in his daily life the lessons taught through symbolic ceremonies within the lodge. One of the universal doctrines of Freemasonry is a belief in the “Brotherhood of Man and the Fatherhood of God”.

Each Freemason practices the three principle tenets: Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth, while promoting a way of life that binds like-minded men in a worldwide brotherhood transcending all religious, ethnic, cultural, social and educational differences.

Wisconsin Masons practice Family Friendly Freemasonry. We do this out of love and practice it in how we live and through programs we support. Included in these programs are help for families of our deployed military, scholarships, support for youth, medical research, children’s hospitals, and our Honored Ladies. Masons champion the heroes of our society such as veterans, teachers, police and first responders.
