Go Baby Go! Is a partnership between Children’s Wisconsin and local universities, including Marquette, dedicated to helping kids with special needs gain more independent mobility through the use of custom motorized cars. The Valley of Milwaukee Scottish Rite has donated to this program for the last several years.
The modified toy cars give children with mobility disabilities a chance to play and socialize with their peers more easily. Research shows that independent mobility is linked to cognitive, social, motor, language, and other developmental benefits in young children. Being pushed in a stroller, or being carried from one place to another is fundamentally different from having active control over one’s own exploration, which is where the development gains are seen. And it provides families an alternative to expensive wheelchairs, which are not always covered by insurance.
And, most importantly, it lets kids…be kids!
